The Department of Justice and Public Safety – Civil Division serves as the law firm for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Civil Division represents the Province on significant legal and public policy matters and offers a collaborative, team-oriented work environment. We are currently seeking a lawyer with management experience and a strong background in litigation to join our Litigation Unit.
Duties
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting legal research, preparing and reviewing legal documents, and interpreting contracts, legislation, and regulations. They will provide advice to Ministers, Deputy/Assistant Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government officials on a broad range of legal and strategic matters, including lands and natural resources, government operations, public and administrative law, procurement, Indigenous rights, and environmental law.
As part of the litigation team, the candidate will represent the Province in civil proceedings before trial and appellate courts, boards, and tribunals (including the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada). While this position is based in St. John’s, occasional travel throughout the province may be required.
In addition to maintaining a full litigation practice, the Manager of the Litigation Unit will oversee and coordinate the work of 8–10 litigators, ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the unit. The role also includes supervising and managing the delivery of professional and comprehensive legal advice and services.
Qualifications
Applicants must be a practicing member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador for at least 10 years. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in civil litigation and possess strong judgment, analytical, organizational, and communication skills. The ideal candidate will take initiative, foster positive working relationships, and demonstrate effective leadership. Management experience, particularly in supervising lawyers, will be considered an asset.
