The Federation of Law Societies of Canada (“Federation”) is the national association of the 14 law societies mandated by the provinces and territories to regulate Canada’s legal profession in the public interest. It is the body through which Canada’s law societies collaborate at the national level, share information on trends and issues affecting the legal profession, and engage in collective action and decision-making. The Federation is also the law societies’ national and international voice on important issues related to the regulation and core values of the legal profession.

The Federation is seeking an experienced lawyer with policy and managerial experience for the Director, Policy and Public Affairs position. Reporting to the Executive Director, Policy and Public Affairs, the successful candidate will play a hands-on role in supervising a team of policy lawyers who support the development of policy on a wide range of matters at the core of the Federation’s mandate, as well as national initiatives and projects related to the regulation of the legal profession. As required, the Director, Policy and Public Affairs will also provide direct support to policy committees, conduct research, prepare briefing materials, reports, and submissions, and provide input and advice on a broad range of policy matters. The successful candidate will also be the staff lead for government relations initiatives, including monitoring and analyzing legislative and regulatory developments and engaging in government and parliamentary outreach.

Candidates must be a member in good standing of a Canadian law society. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience, including policy and managerial experience. Involvement in a professional regulatory or association environment is desirable, but not required. Knowledge of the machinery of government will be a definite asset.
