Civil Division (Family Litigation Unit) – St. John’s, NL
The Department of Justice and Public Safety – Civil Division is the law firm for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Civil Division represents the Province on the most significant legal and public policy issues of the day and offers an engaging and collaborative team-based working environment. The Department is seeking a lawyer to join the Civil Division’s Family Litigation Unit to represent the Province at the Inquiry Respecting the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System, along with other assigned duties.
Duties
The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective and efficient representation of the Province at the Inquiry Respecting the Treatment, Experiences and Outcomes of Innu in the Child Protection System. This includes conducting research and hearings, preparing and reviewing legal documents, and advising Ministers, Deputy/Assistant Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government leaders on various legal and strategic issues.
Qualifications
Membership in the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, either current or imminent, is required. The successful candidate should have litigation experience, and knowledge of the child protection system would be an asset. Candidates should possess significant knowledge and experience in child protection and administrative law. Knowledge and experience in complementary subject areas will be considered in the overall assessment of a candidate’s practice.
Candidates must demonstrate effective decision-making and judgment, analytical, organizational, and communication abilities. Applicants must also exhibit initiative, the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships, and leadership qualities. A minimum of ten years of experience is required.
This position will require travel to Labrador.
