SUMMARY:Ransomware Rises: Practical Techniques to Reduce Risk (free session) by St. John's KnowledgeNet Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Please join the St. John’s KnowledgeNet Chapter for Ransomware Rises: Practical techniques to reduce risk on Thursday February 23\, 2023\, 12:30 to 2:30 NL time. This free virtual session is open to all – you do not need to be an IAPP member – but you do need to register via the IAPP website to receive your invitation and meeting link: https://iapp.org/store/knowledgenets/a0l1P00000ErFezQAF/ \nThis session employs a hypothetical case study that will explore the unfortunate story of a smaller public sector health organization that suffers a serious ransomware attack. Attendees will review their practices\, find the gaps and offer practical solutions and techniques to reduce risk. Checklists and a control placemat designed for small organizations to evaluate their programs will be provided. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss concerns faced at their organizations and solutions they’ve developed to improve privacy maturity. Participation is highly encouraged! \nThis is an interactive presentation featuring Aron Feuer and Sukhpreet Singh: \n\nAron Feuer is the managing director of cybersecurity at Valencia. Before cybersecurity\, he earned a degree in behavioural science\, and worked as a stockbroker in Toronto. He started Cygnos IT Security as head hacker and sold the firm to Grant Thornton in 2012 where he was Vice President of Privacy and Security. In 2015 he founded Valencia IIP Advisors Limited which specializes in cybersecurity\, privacy\, and cloud.\n\nAron’s work is with the federal government\, cities\, provinces\, fortune firms\, national retailers. He’s responded to hacks by anonymous\, run federal classified security projects\, and hundreds of penetration tests\, risk assessments\, simulations incident response work. \nAron sits on Algonquin College’s Cybersecurity Advisory Board. With Kris Klein\, he authored “Canadian Privacy: Data Protection Law and Policy for the Practitioner”. He presents every few weeks to boards\, city managers\, health care organizations\, and security events. He’s been on CBC\, Global\, CTV news in his capacity as a cybersecurity subject matter expert. His certifications include CISSP\, CISA\, CRISC\, CRMA\, CDPSE and CIPP/C\, MCSE. \n\nSukhpreet Singh is an intermediate privacy risk analyst at Valencia. Before this\, he was a public servant at the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and Transport Canada. There he worked on developing robust privacy management programs and completing PIA’s. He joined Valencia in 2022 and specializes in privacy\, data governance and policy development.\n\nSukhpreet works with federal institutions\, municipalities\, provincial authorities\, national retailers and tech firms. He has investigated privacy breaches\, reviewed classified government programs vis a vis PIAs and constantly works with clients to update their incident response or program policies to remain risk averse. \nSukhpreet is an active alumnus of the School of Public Policy at York University\, where he is also completing his Masters in Public Administration\, Policy and Law. He regularly collaborates with the school to engage students on career development and industry trends\, to support the next generation of public servant graduates.
