SUMMARY:Indigenous Legal Orders Conference 2023: Standing Up Indigenous Law
DESCRIPTION:Exploring how Indigenous legal traditions and the common law can co-exist\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend: All who focus on Indigenous legal issues\, including the judiciary\, lawyers in private practice\, industry\, and government; Indigenous leaders\, employees of First Nations or First Nations organizations\, in-house counsel\, law students\, and Indigenous community members \nLearning level: All levels \nThis conference will be of interest to anyone involved in legal issues respecting Indigenous peoples\, and to everyone interested in building constructive partnerships in Canada. \nYou will learn from scholars and practitioners of Indigenous law about the legal principles and concepts underlying Indigenous legal orders\, as well as about the importance of Indigenous legal processes and institutions. \nYou are invited to join this conversation about how Indigenous legal traditions and the common law might productively co-exist. You will hear of existing applications of Indigenous law and what it means to establish a pluralistic approach to legal problem-solving in Canada. \nThe conference is unique because it does not discuss Aboriginal law (Canadian laws and policy about Indigenous peoples or the relationship with Indigenous peoples)\, but rather Indigenous legal traditions in and of themselves. This discussion is intended to be broad-based and stretch across different legal fields\, including health\, criminal justice\, child welfare\, environmental law\, land-based planning\, as well as hybrid solutions where attempts are being made to “indigenize” current legal processes. \nYou will learn about: \n\nexisting applications of Indigenous laws\nlegal principles and concepts underlying Indigenous legal orders\nestablishing a pluralistic approach to legal problem-solving\nhow Indigenous legal traditions and the common law might productively co-exist\nthe importance of Indigenous legal processes and institutions\nwhat it means to live and work in a multi-juridical system\nhow to think about\, work with\, and implement Indigenous laws\n\nLaw Society of BC CPD Hours: 6 hours (this course will contain a minimum of 1 hour pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics\, client care and relations\, and/or practice management). Please note: The CPD hours of the rebroadcast will either meet or exceed the CPD hours of the original live webinar course. \nCourse Chairs\nLeah Sisi-ya-ama George-Wilson — Miller Titerle + Company LLP\, Vancouver\nDr. Sarah Morales (Su-taxwiye) — Associate Professor\, Faculty of Law\, University of Victoria\, Victoria \n*Please note: The in-person session is dependent on a minimum number of registrants and may not be confirmed until 4 weeks before the course date. \nAre you an Indigenous lawyer or community member?\nWe value your contributions and encourage your participation in all of our programs.
