SUMMARY:Elder Law 2025
DESCRIPTION:Practical tools for protecting the elderly\n\n\n\n\n\n\nvia webinar only \nCan’t make the webinar or rebroadcasts?\nWant online CPD available 24/7?\nSubscribe to Courses On Demand\, our comprehensive online resource with 4\,000+ videos and 6\,300+ papers from CLEBC courses. This course will be added to Courses on Demand approximately 30 days from the original course date. \nWho should attend: Lawyers who practice in the area of estate planning and estate administration \nLearning level: Intermediate/Advanced \nPeople aged 65 and older are a quickly growing demographic in Canada\, with the size of this population projected to double worldwide over the next 25 years. While longer lifespans are in many ways a boon\, this demographic shift also gives rise to new and evolving challenges. Among these is the trend towards progressively increasing vulnerability in the elderly\, both physical and cognitive\, and the consequent need to provide protection to victimized members of this group. \nLawyers are often uniquely positioned to assist in quarterbacking such protective measures\, particularly if they are attuned to the applicable law and available resources. This course is designed to provide legal professionals with an up-to-date overview of the prevailing jurisprudence\, practical advice on how to prevent and curtail elder abuse\, working with clients who may have capacity limitations\, and more. \nAfter taking this program\, you will: \n\nbe up to date on recent case law\nunderstand issues regarding incapable clients\ngain knowledge of elder abuse\nbe aware of advanced planning for clients with disabilities and dementia

SUMMARY:Cultivating Indigenous-Informed Legal Practices 2025
DESCRIPTION:Learning how to adopt a strength-based approach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, October 9\, 2025 (9:00 am – 4:00 pm)\nFriday\, October 10\, 2025 (9:00 am – 12:00 pm)\nCLEBC Boardroom\, 500 – 1155 West Pender Street\, Vancouver\nor attend via webinar \nPlease note: This course will not be added to Courses on Demand.  Courses involving professional speakers and skills-based workshops generally do not get added to Courses on Demand. \nWho should attend: Lawyers\, legal support staff\, notaries\, and anyone involved in the legal profession in all areas including family\, child protection\, criminal\, Aboriginal\, litigation\, and others \nLearning level: All levels \nThis course is designed to help members of the legal profession deepen their commitment to reconciliation by enhancing their intercultural competency skills and client relations through the development of Indigenous-informed legal practices. Participants will build on their practical communication and interviewing skills by examining the impacts of historical and intergenerational trauma and learning how to adopt a strength-based approach in working with Indigenous communities and individuals. \nThe course content will explore intercultural competency and concepts such as cultural recognition\, empowerment\, collaboration\, trust-building\, therapeutic justice\, and cultural humility. \nA note about pedagogy: This one-and-a-half-day course will be rooted in Indigenous values that emphasize the importance of connection\, storytelling\, and collective wisdom in developing an Indigenous-informed practice. Open dialogue ‘In the Round’ will be encouraged\, offering participants the chance to share their stories\, knowledge\, and expertise. This process serves as a powerful tool for learning and building connections\, enabling participants to engage in discussions that promote mutual respect\, collaboration\, and reflection while gaining new insights from diverse perspectives on a common issue. This approach illustrates an Indigenous strength-based method of learning grounded in the belief that knowledge is shared rather than held by a single individual\, nurturing trust and relationship-building by honouring each other’s voices and perspectives. \nParticipants will not be asked to engage in any role-playing exercises; instead\, they will focus on case studies that require collaborative problem-solving and participate in meaningful peer discussions about best practices\, as well as the challenges they encounter. By adopting this approach\, legal practitioners can integrate Indigenous-informed practices into their work\, enriching their understanding of how to engage meaningfully with clients and communities. This will ultimately lead to more effective and respectful legal outcomes. \nThis course is specifically designed to provide members of the legal profession with Indigenous-informed cultural competency training in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action No. 27 and 42.
