This will be a valuable opportunity for members to obtain a comprehensive update on and survey of key developments\, and to discuss practical issues with one of Canada’s leading experts in the area. \nTopics to be addressed by Professor Wood in this seminar include: \n  \n\nI.        Scope of the PPSA\n\n\nLicenses\nFlawed asset arrangements\nCape Town Convention(International Interests in Mobile Aircraft Equipment Act)\n\n  \n\nII.      The Security Agreement\n\n\nAll obligation clauses\nSubordination clauses\nCharging clauses\n\n  \n\nIII.    Supplementing PPSA Priorities\n\n\nUnjust Enrichment and Equity\nEquitable Subrogation\nMarshalling of Securities\n\n\nIV.   Competitions with Bank Act Security\n\n\nThe SCC decisions in Innovation and Radius\nThe 2012 Bank Act Amendments\n\n  \n\nV.     The Effect of Bankruptcy on Priorities\n\n\nThe federal ranking of secured creditors\nThe statutory deemed trust for source deductions\n\n  \n\nVI.   The Securities Transfer Act\n\n\nThe new concept of a security entitlement\nPerfection by control\n\nAbout the Presenter\nProfessor Roderick Wood teaches and publishes in the areas of commercial law\, bankruptcy and insolvency law\, and debtor-creditor law at the Faculty of Law\, University of Alberta. Professor Wood has served as Associate Dean at the Faculty of Law\, as Board Member of the Alberta Law Reform Institute\, and as Commissioner of the Law Commission of Canada. \nProfessor Wood has co-authored books on secured transactions law in Canada and New Zealand\, including the Canadian treatise Personal Property Security Law\, Second Edition\, published in October 2012. This second edition updates the area of personal property security law in Canada with new case law\, including some important SCC cases clarifying the law or providing the conceptual basis for its further amplification\, and covers significant changes to legislation which interfaces with the PPSA\, such as the Securities Transfer Acts. He is also the author of Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law (Irwin Law; 2009)\, and has written over two dozen articles in various law journals. \nProfessor Wood is the 2004 recipient of the Tevie H Miller Teaching Excellence Award for the Faculty of Law\, a 2005 recipient of the AC Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at the University of Alberta\, and a 2006 recipient of a McCalla Professorship for his contribution to research in law at the University of Alberta.
