DESCRIPTION:Please join us online on Thursday\, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. (7:00 p.m. ADT) for this month’s NLHS lecture: \nThe Mysterious Lambert de Boilieu by Robin McGrath  \nRecollection of Labrador Life was first published in England in 1861 by Lambert de Boilieu\, then reprinted with editing and notes by Thomas F. Bredin by Ryerson Press in 1969. The work has been widely accepted as a memoir of life at Battle Harbour in the 1850s\, and is frequently cited in popular and academic articles. However\, research about the book and its author clearly indicated that no such person as de Boilieu existed by that name\, and many of the events described could not have happened in the 1850s\, if at all. DESCRIPTION:In the 1980s and 1990s there were several high-profile criminal cases involving child witnesses who reported heinous acts of abuse that could not have occurred as described by the children. Reports were elicited by aggressive and coercive interviewers who were committed to uncovering abuse. These cases spurred a tremendous amount of research on the strengths and limitations of children’s eyewitness memory. In turn\, this research was the foundation for the development of several child forensic interview protocols. Although there are many different protocols\, all the good ones follow a few best-practice principles. \nThe Criminal Defense Advocacy Society and Courthouse Libraries BC invite criminal law practitioners to join us for a webinar on Child Forensic Interviewing: Dos and Don’ts. SUMMARY:Changing Professional Obligations for Family Law Lawyers Under the New Provisions of the Divorce Act
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation by the Atlantic Chapter of the National Alliance Project\, we will briefly review the Divorce Act amendments\, focusing on new duties placed on the parties\, judges\, and lawyers. In particular\, we will discuss how practicing lawyers must also follow the ethical duties set by their provincial or territorial regulator\, which is often consistent with the Federation of Law Societies of Canada Model Code of Professional Conduct. What lawyers may notice\, however\, is that all of these duties conflict and present additional challenges\, particularly when dealing with claims of family violence and the rights of children. We will review cases around the country interpreting the scope of the new duties on lawyers as well as the responses to the ethical issues lawyers may consider in the context of family violence cases.
