Participation is highly encouraged! \nThis is an interactive presentation featuring Aron Feuer and Sukhpreet Singh: \n\nAron Feuer is the managing director of cybersecurity at Valencia. Before cybersecurity\, he earned a degree in behavioural science\, and worked as a stockbroker in Toronto. He started Cygnos IT Security as head hacker and sold the firm to Grant Thornton in 2012 where he was Vice President of Privacy and Security. In 2015 he founded Valencia IIP Advisors Limited which specializes in cybersecurity\, privacy\, and cloud.\n\nAron’s work is with the federal government\, cities\, provinces\, fortune firms\, national retailers. He’s responded to hacks by anonymous\, run federal classified security projects\, and hundreds of penetration tests\, risk assessments\, simulations incident response work. \nAron sits on Algonquin College’s Cybersecurity Advisory Board. With Kris Klein\, he authored “Canadian Privacy: Data Protection Law and Policy for the Practitioner”. He presents every few weeks to boards\, city managers\, health care organizations\, and security events. He’s been on CBC\, Global\, CTV news in his capacity as a cybersecurity subject matter expert. His certifications include CISSP\, CISA\, CRISC\, CRMA\, CDPSE and CIPP/C\, MCSE. \n\nSukhpreet Singh is an intermediate privacy risk analyst at Valencia. Before this\, he was a public servant at the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and Transport Canada. There he worked on developing robust privacy management programs and completing PIA’s. He joined Valencia in 2022 and specializes in privacy\, data governance and policy development.\n\nSukhpreet works with federal institutions\, municipalities\, provincial authorities\, national retailers and tech firms. He has investigated privacy breaches\, reviewed classified government programs vis a vis PIAs and constantly works with clients to update their incident response or program policies to remain risk averse. \nSukhpreet is an active alumnus of the School of Public Policy at York University\, where he is also completing his Masters in Public Administration\, Policy and Law. He regularly collaborates with the school to engage students on career development and industry trends\, to support the next generation of public servant graduates.

This seminar will highlight decisions from Newfoundland and Labrador and other Canadian jurisdictions in 2020\, 2021 & 2022. There will also be a discussion regarding the Vavilov standard of judicial review and its application. A wine & cheese reception will follow. \nJohn Whelan – Arbitrator\, Mediator\, Workplace Investigator (Principal – Whelan Dispute Resolution) \nJohn holds a Commerce degree from Memorial (2005) and a LL.B. from UNB (2008).  Called to the Bar in 2009\, John spent 12 years as in-house counsel and Executive Director of a large community care organization before making the shift to a neutral practice. John has extensive practical experience in employment\, labour\, and municipal law. \nPaula Schumph\, General Counsel\, Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) \nPaula completed degrees in Business Administration (Acadia) and Law (Dalhousie) prior to her call to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 1996. She has been in-house counsel to NAPE for 21 years. Immediately prior to joining NAPE\, Paula represented employers who were members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association. \nDarren Stratton\, McInnes Cooper (Employer Counsel) \nDarren completed degrees in Commerce (Memorial) and Law (Dalhousie) prior to his call to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 1993. SUMMARY:Labour\, Employment & Administrative Law: A Review of 2020 – 2022 Decisions
DESCRIPTION:Place: 3rd Floor\, Law Society Building\, 196-198 Water Street \nSeminar Overview\nThere were a number of noteworthy developments in labour\, employment and administrative law in recent years. This seminar will highlight decisions from Newfoundland and Labrador and other Canadian jurisdictions in 2020\, 2021 & 2022. There will also be a discussion regarding the Vavilov standard of judicial review and its application. Called to the Bar in 2009\, John spent 12 years as in-house counsel and Executive Director of a large community care organization before making the shift to a neutral practice. John has extensive practical experience in employment\, labour\, and municipal law.Paula Schumph\, General Counsel\, Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE)\nPaula completed degrees in Business Administration (Acadia) and Law (Dalhousie) prior to her call to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 1996. She has been in-house counsel to NAPE for 21 years. SUMMARY:Sentencing Guidance in Canada: Conceptual Trends and Practical Problems
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will examine the Canadian approach to sentencing guidance (both legislative and appellate) as it has shaped up in recent years. The first part of the webinar will be more conceptual and historical\, exploring the uniqueness of the Canadian approach\, in comparative perspective\, and examining the idea of “individualized proportionality”\, which has developed as the guiding concept in the jurisprudence over the last 20 years. The second part of the webinar will turn to certain practical problems and issues that are in tension with this overall conceptual trend\, notably the role of starting points\, sentencing ranges\, and the interpretation of legislative “signals”. DESCRIPTION:Please join us online on Thursday\, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. (7:00 p.m. ADT) for this month’s NLHS lecture: \nThe Mysterious Lambert de Boilieu by Robin McGrath  \nRecollection of Labrador Life was first published in England in 1861 by Lambert de Boilieu\, then reprinted with editing and notes by Thomas F. Bredin by Ryerson Press in 1969. The work has been widely accepted as a memoir of life at Battle Harbour in the 1850s\, and is frequently cited in popular and academic articles. However\, research about the book and its author clearly indicated that no such person as de Boilieu existed by that name\, and many of the events described could not have happened in the 1850s\, if at all.
