If you miss the live program\, you can access the archive\, at your convenience\, for 60 days. \n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend\nAll lawyers whose practice includes estate planning and administration\, particularly those who advise farm families or clients with agricultural property or farming businesses\, will benefit from this program. \n\n\nAbout the Program\nFor many families\, the farm is much more than a business. It may represent generations of work\, significant family wealth and a way of life clients hope to pass on to their children. But successfully transitioning a family farm requires careful coordination of estate\, business and tax planning — and the tax rules that apply to farming are very different from those that apply to other businesses and assets. This program\, with experienced farm tax and succession planning lawyer Mona Brown\, will provide a practical guide to the issues lawyers need to understand when advising clients on farm succession planning. Topics will include determining whether property qualifies for special farm tax treatment; the capital gains exemption and other tax planning opportunities; intergenerational transfers; planning where one child farms and others do not; equalization and financing; and coordinating the client’s will\, ownership structure and tax plan\, and planning for family law. Along the way\, Mona will address the practical questions that can make or break a succession plan: Who wants to farm? Can the farming child afford to take over? How can non-farming children be treated fairly without jeopardizing the operation? Don’t miss this opportunity to better understand the unique tax and succession planning issues facing farm families and help clients develop a plan that reflects their goals for the future of the farm. \n\n\nMeet Your Presenter\nMona Brown is a lawyer with the Carman\, Manitoba office of PKF Lawyers. Her practice has focused for over 46 years on farm and small business tax and succession planning. Raised on a farm in Southern Manitoba\, Mona farms with her husband near Sperling\, giving her a practical understanding of the financial\, tax and family dynamics involved in transitioning agricultural businesses to the next generation. She regularly advises clients on farm reorganizations\, intergenerational transfers\, estate freezes\, family trusts\, tax-planned wills and strategies for balancing the interests of farming and non-farming children. Mona holds the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation and is a founding member of the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors (CAFA). She has authored materials on farm tax planning\, wills and estates and family law and is a frequent presenter on farm and small business tax and succession planning for accountants\, lawyers and other professionals.

SUMMARY:CIAJ 2026 Annual Conference - Reimagining Law and Justice Through Restorative Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Offered by the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ)\, this conference will explore the growing movement of restorative approaches in communities and examine how restorative justice principles can reshape our understanding of law and justice. Moving beyond a solely punitive model\, restorative approaches invite a re-examination of how harm is addressed\, how accountability is understood\, and how relationships are repaired. The conference will consider how these principles can transform legal processes across diverse areas of law—criminal\, family\, administrative\, and community-based contexts—and what their broader implications are for access to justice\, legitimacy\, and public trust in legal institutions.

SUMMARY:Using Inter Vivos Trusts in Estate Planning

You will need a current web browser (Chrome (Chrome works best)\, Safari\, Firefox)\, a wired (better than wireless) connection to the Internet of at least 2 Mbps. You can test your internet speed/bandwidth here. If you miss the live program\, you can access the archive\, at your convenience\, for 60 days. \n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend\nAttend this program if you are an estate planning lawyer\, a wills and estates practitioner\, or a general practitioner who advises clients on estate planning. \n\n\nAbout the Program\nInter vivos trusts are among the most valuable—and often least understood—tools available to estate planners. Yet many lawyers receive little practical guidance on when to recommend them\, how to select the right trust for a client’s objectives\, and how to incorporate them effectively into estate planning strategies. In this highly practical presentation\, experienced trusts and estates practitioner Lynne Butler focuses on the real-world decisions involved in using inter vivos trusts. You’ll examine the most commonly used trust structures\, learn when each trust is appropriate\, how it should be structured\, which assets belong in a trust\, the tax implications to consider\, and the practical issues that can affect a trust’s effectiveness. Rather than a review of trust law\, the session emphasizes the planning decisions lawyers face when advising clients. Among the questions Lynne will attempt to answer are: When should I recommend a trust instead of leaving assets by will? What tax issues should be considered before recommending a trust? When is a trust not the right solution? Don’t miss this opportunity to strengthen your trust planning skills and gain practical guidance you can apply with your next client! \n\n\nMeet Your Presenter\nLynne Butler is a writer and retired mediator and lawyer. She graduated from UBC Law School and was called to the Bar in Alberta in 1986. After more than 20 years\, thousands of wills drawn and hundreds of estates probated\, Lynne joined the estates department of a leading trust company for a further seven years. She subsequently practiced law in her home province of Newfoundland and Labrador\, working exclusively in wills\, estates\, probate\, elder law\, and trusts. Lynne has been interviewed by Global TV\, BNN\, CBC Radio\, the Wall Street Journal\, the Globe & Mail\, the Vancouver Province\, the Edmonton Journal\, the Toronto Star and the Montreal Gazette\, among other media. She is the former co-host of The Law Show and is the author of ten books about estate planning. Lynne was the reviewer for Newfoundland and Labrador for LexisNexis Drafting Wills in Canada: A Lawyer’s Practical Guide\, 3rd Edition and chaired the Wills and Estates Section of the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar Admissions Course from 2015 to 2019.
