SUMMARY:Critical Incident Group Debriefing
DESCRIPTION:Critical incidents are situations that occur outside of our normal frame of reference and challenge us to understand and cope with what has happened. Critical Incident Group Debriefing (CIGD) is a short-term group intervention process that focuses on an immediate event. CIGD is one of several methods that may be utilized to lessen the likelihood of people experiencing symptoms of trauma and stress after a critical incident. This group debriefing process provides a place for participants to talk and share experiences\, and for the facilitator to teach and provide information about the impact of critical incidents. While participants of this workshop will learn how to facilitate a group debriefing\, they will also learn how to discern when CIGD is appropriate for a group and when it might not be a suitable intervention.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\nUpon completion\, participants should be able to: \n\nUnderstand how people respond differently to the same event\nDescribe a framework for facilitating a group debriefing\nKnow the benefits and potential problems with group debriefing\nIdentify when critical incident group debriefing is appropriate\nApply principles learned to their own environment\n\n\n\nMethod of Delivery\nPresentation\, video\, case study exercises\, experiential practice\, personal reflection\, delivered electronically. \n\n*Please allow only the registered individual(s) to view the materials. \n\n\n\n\nSome of the Topics Included\n\nDefinitions and Overview\nRole of Group Debriefing\nPossible Reactions to a Critical Incident\nResponse Variables\nPost-Traumatic Stress Disorder\nGroup Debriefing History\nGroup Debriefing Models\nBenefits and Problems with Group Debriefing\nPreparing for a Group Debriefing\nCIGD Phases\nConsiderations About the Process\nTips for Facilitators\nCo-Facilitating\n\n\n\nTarget Audience\nThis is an intermediate level workshop intended for school personnel\, social service and health care professionals\, counsellors\, social workers\, managers\, human resource professionals\, and anyone seeking a better understanding of how to facilitate a group debriefing after a tragic event. \n\n\nTerms & Conditions\nView our cancellation policy and other information regarding your live virtual workshop or for your in-person workshop. \nThis is a live virtual event\, please check your system requirements prior to registering. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrainer: John Koop Harder\nMSW\, RSW\nJohn has been working as a therapist and trainer for over 20 years. SUMMARY:Recent Developments in the Law of Damages and Injunctions
DESCRIPTION:Live Event Time: 12:00 PM ET\nHosted by Thomson Reuters\n\n\n\n\nThe last few years have been busy ones for developments in injunctions law and have generated important new decisions on the jurisdiction to grant injunctions\, injunctions in relation to homeless encampments and occupation protests\, interlocutory injunctions in Charter cases\, and interlocutory injunctions in defamation cases. The leading Canadian authority on injunctions and equitable remedies\, the Honourable Robert J. Sharpe\, discusses these developments both in domestic Canadian law and internationally.\n\n2023 and 2024 have also seen significant new decisions on the law of damages\, including the confirmation by the Supreme Court of Canada that the state is liable for damages when legislation is clearly unconstitutional at the time of enactment or is enacted by the state in bad faith or as an abuse of power. In terms of private law damages\, there have been some remarkably high awards recently\, including a punitive damages award of $1\,500\,000 in Ontario which had an emphatically deterrent function\, and a massive trial award of $10\,125\,000 in British Columbia for the tort of misfeasance in public office. These developments are discussed by Patrick Healy\, a commercial litigator in Toronto\, who is the new author of The Law of Damages in succession to the late Professor Stephen Waddams.\n\nBusy at this time? SUMMARY:National Virtual Town Hall by the African Nova Scotian Justice Institute
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the African Nova Scotian Justice Institute (ANSJI)\, you are invited to a National Virtual Town Hall to garner support for the development of a National IRCA™ Centre. The purpose of the National IRCA™ Centre will be to support the ongoing development of IRCA™ service delivery in each provincial and territorial jurisdiction. \nImpact of Race and Culture Assessments (IRCAs™) are pre-sentencing reports that help judges better understand how systemic barriers like poverty\, marginalization\, racism\, and social exclusion have affected offenders of African descent\, racialized\, and other overrepresented persons and their interactions with the justice system. Click here and here to learn more about IRCAs™. \nThis Town Hall will bring together Provincial\, Territorial\, and National organizations and individuals who support work within the intersection of race and justice in Canada. The Town Hall has four main purposes: \n\nTo inform participants about the idea of creating a National IRCA™ Centre\,\nTo assess if there is consensus for the creation of a National IRCA™ Centre\,\nTo use the feedback gathered from the Town Hall to inform the feasibility study that will be submitted to the Federal Department of Justice\, and\nTo nominate a member review Committee that will play a key role in reviewing and providing feedback on the development of the feasibility study.\n\nYour input will help shape this critical work\, and ensure that it reflects the diverse perspectives and experiences of those working at the intersection of race and justice across Canada. \nTo accommodate participants across the country\, we will host two sessions. The first session will be held Tuesday\, February 11th\, 2025 at 1:00PM (AST) via Zoom\, and the second will be Thursday\, February 13th\, 2025 at 2:30PM (AST) via Zoom. Our hope is that you will be able to join the session that best fits your schedule. \nPlease RSVP by Monday\, February 3rd\, 2025 by clicking here and indicate your preferred session. Additional details including the agenda and the virtual meeting link will be sent closer to the session dates. \nWe are also asking for your participation in a short survey to gather your initial thoughts on the creation of a National IRCA™ Centre. Your participation in this survey is important in the gathering of information and data to inform the development of the feasibility study. You can complete the survey here.  \nPlease feel free to share this invitation or link to the survey (https://forms.office.com/r/ZiVthgY6AF) with other leaders who work in the areas of race and justice in Canada.  \nYour participation is crucial to the success of this initiative\, and we sincerely hope you can join us in this important conversation.
