Reminder – Law Commission of Canada
The Canadian Government announced in Budget 2021 the re-establishment of the Law Commission of Canada. The Commission is a statutory body that provides independent advice to the federal Government on improvements, modernization and reforms aimed at ensuring a just legal system that meets the changing needs of Canadian society. The Commission will address complex challenges such as systemic racism in the justice system, legal issues around climate change, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and rapid technological shifts in the world.
Selection processes have launched to appoint the full-time President of the Commission as well as the part-time Commissioners.
As a group, the President and Commissioners should be broadly representative of the diversity of Canada, represent various disciplines, and reflect knowledge of the Canada’s legal systems.
