Overview:

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Membership (or eligibility for immediate membership) with the Law Society of Manitoba, in good standing
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Search with Vulnerable Sector, Adult Abuse Registry, and Child Abuse Registry checks
  • Enhanced Security Screening
  • Evening and weekend work as required
  • Ability to travel by road, air, and small watercraft, including overnight stays
  • Valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Advocacy experience in legal practice
  • Superior oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Effective case management and organizational skills, with the ability to meet short deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Resilience, with the ability to adapt, learn, and grow through challenges and pressure

Desired:

  • Prosecution or Criminal Law experience
  • French language proficiency for certain locations

Duties:
As a Crown Attorney, you will provide prosecutorial services for cases arising under the Criminal Code of Canada and provincial statutes in both provincial and superior courts. Duties also include providing legal opinions, reviewing police reports, and guiding police on charges.

Crown Attorneys are members of the Manitoba Association of Crown Attorneys, and the collective agreement is available here. The successful candidate may also participate in community and legal education on behalf of the Manitoba Prosecution Service as needed.

For the Evening Detention Crown Review position, duties include conducting early custody file reviews, liaising with legal aid duty counsel, and attending s. 503 hearings before the Judicial Justice of the Peace. The anticipated hours for this position are from 4 pm to 11 pm, Monday to Friday, with remote work.
