Engaging with the child welfare system can be incredibly disempowering for families. Numerous Collaborative Decision-making (CDM) processes are available and are designed to empower families, including youth, to participate actively in decision-making that impacts them. CDM processes include mediation, family group conferences (FGCs), family case planning conferences (FCPCs), youth transition conferences, and traditional decision-making.
With so many options, it can be very difficult for families to navigate process choice. When would it be better to request mediation instead of an FGC? When and where can one ask for a youth transition conference?
Participants will learn more about existing collaborative decision-making processes and how to assist clients to choose the process(es) that best supports them. Speakers will share information about navigation services, research into “early” and preventative mediation, and how to best support clients in preparing for and participating in these processes.
Speakers will also discuss examples of changes and increased opportunities for CDM, as First Nations exercise jurisdiction for their children and develop legislation to guide decision-making in this area.
