Legal French for Beginners Series

The Fédération des Francophones de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, in partnership with Memorial University and the Centre Canadien de français juridique, and with the support of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, plans to offer a series of beginner to intermediate micro-courses in Legal French.

The goal of this pilot project is to enhance the professional skills of legal practitioners by improving their French proficiency, enabling them to better serve the diverse needs of the French-speaking community in Newfoundland and Labrador. No previous French experience is required.

The course includes registration for the DELF exam. The DELF diploma is internationally recognized and valid for life (see more: DELF-DALF).

The course qualifies for CPD credit under the Law Society’s Continuing Professional Development Program.

Time Commitment

This series will begin on September 10, 2024, and run until August 16, 2025. The series is structured around six micro-courses, each building upon the learning outcomes of the previous course.

Each micro-course spans eight weeks, with two 90-minute weekly sessions focusing on beginner-intermediate French. For every 10 hours of beginner-intermediate French sessions, attendees will also a 60 minute online session focused on legal terminology.

Time and Place

The lectures will take place at Memorial University’s Nexus Centre (SN 4022) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and online on Fridays (every three weeks). Lectures can also be attended online, and recordings will be accessible if missed.

Cost

Registration for the entire series of courses will open in August 2024.

Due to limited spaces, early registration is encouraged. As this is a pilot project, registration fees for this year are subsidized. The total cost for the series (September to August) is $1,500. Participants will also need to purchase an online workbook for $99.
