Who should attend: Civil litigators at all levels who want an intensive course on effective civil litigation strategy and advocacy

Learning level: All levels

This two-day course will provide training on effective civil litigation strategy and advocacy over the arc of a file, from the commencement of a civil proceeding through to the hearing on the merits. The faculty will present practical guidance and strategies on the key procedural steps of a civil litigation file. The course will also offer views from the bench on effective advocacy in chambers and at trial.

Over the course of two days, you will learn:

  • how to properly frame your case with pleadings
  • how to gather the evidence you need to prove your case
  • whether to advance pre-trial applications, and how to prepare effective application materials, including drafting affidavit evidence
  • effective use of summary trial
  • strategies for, and counsel’s duties when, engaging with self-represented litigants
  • proceeding by petition post-Cepuran
  • preparing your case for trial
  • the key components of a civil trial
  • views from the bench on effective chambers and trial advocacy

This course is an excellent complement to any law firm’s in-house training. This year’s program is a reboot of the long-standing CLEBC program Civil Litigation Basics.
