De-escalating Potentially Violent Situations

For those who work in an environment where there is potential for violence, it is important to develop the skills needed to defuse dangerous situations. This workshop is designed to teach people to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. The training will explore how anger and violence interplay, including opportunities for self-assessment of personal communication styles. Participants will develop a clear understanding of how to assess the potential for violence and respond with a diverse set of interpersonal tools and strategies designed to defuse potentially violent situations.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Identify their own styles of interaction
  • Describe a framework for defusing potentially violent situations
  • Identify potential risk factors
  • Apply the principles learned to their own environment

Trainer

Shelly Qualtieri
MA, RSW

Shelly is a Registered Social Worker and has been an energetic practitioner and educator in domestic violence, suicide intervention, youth justice, child welfare, mental health, and houselessness for over 25 years. In addition to training with CTRI, she has a private counselling practice where she focuses on wellness, difficult conversations, and healthy relationships. She believes that helping people work through difficult times requires a holistic approach to wellness and meaningful connection. Whether it’s through a mindfulness practice or a strengths-based, person-centred approach, Shelly meets individuals where they are at. As a facilitator, she is a warm, passionate, and engaging presenter who uses examples and strategies that participants can bring directly into their work with others.
