De-escalating Potentially Violent Situations by the Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute

For those who work in an environment where there is potential for violence, it is important to develop the skills needed to defuse dangerous situations. This workshop is designed to teach people to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. The training will explore how anger and violence interplay, including opportunities for self-assessment of personal communication styles. Participants will develop a clear understanding of how to assess the potential for violence and respond with a diverse set of interpersonal tools and strategies designed to defuse potentially violent situations.

Target Audience

This is an introductory-intermediate level workshop intended for anyone wanting to learn more about violence and interpersonal strategies useful in de-escalating the imminent threats of violence.

Trainer: Laval Martin, MSW, RSW

Laval believes it is vital for individuals and organizations to increase their violence-prevention capabilities. He is skilled at helping others develop understanding and increase capacity in being better equipped to de-escalating potentially violent behaviours. Laval has a life-long love for learning and has been leading trainings for close to ten years. He is a Registered Social Worker who holds both a Bachelors and a Master of Social Work degree. Laval has worked in the social service field for over a decade, working with various populations including mental health, developmental disabilities, and homelessness and poverty. He has extensive experience in crisis intervention from working in group homes, shelters, community centres, and drop-ins. As a trainer Laval makes training entertaining and keeps his learners engaged through incorporating real-world stories and examples.
