Enhancing Trial Processes: The Role of Amicus Curiae and Case Management

January 17 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Social Reception to Follow

Seminar Overview

This seminar explores two critical tools for managing complex legal proceedings in the post-Jordan era: the role of amicus curiae and the case management process in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. John Brooks, a senior lawyer with extensive experience as amicus curiae in high-profile cases, will discuss the appointment process, responsibilities, and ethical challenges of the role, highlighting its practical applications in court proceedings. Chief Justice Raymond Whalen will lead the second part, offering insights into the resolution-focused case management process, its practical applications, and opportunities for enhancing trial efficiency. Attendees will benefit from real-world examples, a deeper understanding of these tools, and an interactive Q&A session to explore practical improvements.

In-person attendance is strongly encouraged where possible. Attendees are invited to stay after the seminar for an informal social and lunch, featuring sandwiches from Manna Bakery, beverages, and other refreshments.
