The Declaratory Judgment: Its Availability and Its Limitations

Location: Alt Hotel, St. John’s, NL

Professor Kennedy will explore the “declaratory judgment”—a judgment that does not provide remedies beyond a declaration regarding a legal state of affairs. He will discuss when such judgments may be granted, their purposes, and their advantages and limitations.

A light lunch will be provided. Registration is free but required. Participants can also receive one hour of CLE credit.

About the Speaker:
Professor Gerard Kennedy is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. He earned his JD from Queen’s University (Dean’s Key recipient), completed an LLM at Harvard Law School as a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow, and later received his doctorate at Osgoode Hall Law School. His doctoral work was supported by a Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship and a SSHRC award, with visiting research positions at NYU School of Law and the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg.
