Lawyers must always be diligent to ensure they are not assisting, either directly or indirectly, in money laundering or terrorist activities. This responsibility to be diligent starts with becoming familiar with situations that could be red flags in the areas of law in which you practise.
The Federation of Law Societies of Canada has prepared a helpful document entitled “Risk Advisories for the Legal Profession” which sets out situations which might raise a red flag in the areas of real estate, corporate, private lending, trusts and litigation.
