By a decision of Benchers dated March 26, 1999, Mr. Newton was found guilty of professional misconduct, conduct unbecoming a member and a violation of Chapters I and XVII of the Code of Professional Conduct pursuant to section 52 of the Law Society Act. Benchers ordered that Mr. Newton be reprimanded, that he participate in a counselling program and that he pay the sum of $1,300 towards the expenses and costs incurred by the Society in the investigation of the Complaint.
The violation arose from Mr. Newton’s conviction on a summary offence of unlawful operation of a motor vehicle. The matter proceeded before the Discipline Committee by way of an Agreed Statement of Facts.
