Free Webinar: An Overview of Mental Health Court – Objectives, Outcomes, and Procedures

June 17 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Seminar Overview:

The Mental Health Court (MHC) is a specialized criminal court designed to provide enhanced medical and community-based supports to accused persons appearing before it. The program is founded on the recognition that some individuals living with mental illness may become involved in the criminal justice system as a result of their condition or related lifestyle circumstances. The MHC operates through a collaborative approach involving several stakeholders, including the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Public Prosecutions, Legal Aid NL, Corrections and Community Services, and Court Support Services of NL Health Services.

This one-hour presentation will provide members with an overview of the MHC program, including its objectives, structure, processes, and outcomes. Presenters will also discuss how counsel may engage clients in the program and the role of the various professionals involved in supporting participants. Members of the MHC team will be available to answer questions following the presentation.
