Statement on the Fort Pelly and St. Philips Residential Schools
Sadly, we have been given another reminder of the devastating impact of the residential school system on the Indigenous peoples in Canada with the discovery of 54 potential unmarked graves at the sites of the former Fort Pelly and St. Philips Residential Schools. The Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and ensuring that a knowledge of the history of Indigenous peoples will guide future actions so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. Our thoughts are with the Keeseekoose First Nation and all those who continue to live with the trauma inflicted by the residential school system.
