LSNL Recognizes Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that honours the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. It is also a day to honour those who continue to face violence and discrimination as they work toward more just and inclusive communities. The Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador encourages transgender people and their allies to share their stories and uplift the voices and experiences of the transgender and gender non-conforming community.
Through its Equity and Diversity Committee, The Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion within the profession. Part of the Committee’s mandate is to increase recognition and awareness about important issues for equity seeking groups, including the trans community. It is important that we reflect on the oppression, shame, social stigma, violence and injustice that people from the trans community have suffered. Members are encouraged to recognize the contributions the trans community has made to our profession and help make it more equitable and diverse.
