St. John’s Status of Women Council has developed an e-course called Empowering Them, which is a completely self-paced online course that centers around the topic of gender-based violence. The course is completely accessible, with ASL interpretation and captioning options embedded into it. It takes less than two hours to complete and offers a certificate in the user’s name upon completion.

Gender-based violence impacts everyone, and given that it’s a major, widespread problem, we have to recognize that it is never going to be tackled unless we all play a role in ending it. It could be harmful if people aren’t trained to speak up about gender-based violence. It’s important to respond in a way that creates safety rather than builds risks for the individual that the harm is being inflicted.

The course gives all users the skills and knowledge to recognize and understand the signs of gender-based violence, how to intervene safely and effectively, and centers the needs and well-being of the person experiencing gender-based violence.
