IDENTIFICATION OF PRONOUNS AND TITLES OF COURT PARTICIPANTS – Notice from the SUPREME COURT OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

NOTICE TO THE PROFESSION AND GENERAL PUBLIC

Purpose
This practice note clarifies how parties and/or lawyers can advise the Court, other parties, and lawyers of their pronouns and form of address in court proceedings. In doing so, the Court seeks to foster an inclusive environment for court proceedings, recognizing and respecting all gender identities.

Notice
At the beginning of any in-person or virtual proceeding, when parties are introducing themselves, or lawyers are introducing themselves, a client, a witness or another individual, they are welcome to provide the Justice with each person’s name, pronouns and title (e.g. Ms., Mr., Mx.) to be used in the proceeding.

There is no obligation to inform the Court of pronouns and titles. It is a matter of choice.
