Employment Opportunity: Labour and Employment Lawyer – McLennan Ross (NT)

Our Yellowknife office has an immediate opening for a Labour and Employment Lawyer to join our established and growing Labour and Employment practice.

Position Overview

Our Labour and Employment lawyers have a portfolio of clients in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Our labour and employment group in Yellowknife currently has three partners practicing in labour and employment, as well as some general litigation. Our Yellowknife partners are recognized as leading practitioners in their practice areas.

Being an associate located in the Yellowknife office of McLennan Ross, you will be working with, mentored, and supported by the three labour and employment partners in the Yellowknife office, as well as the lawyers in our Edmonton and Calgary offices. You will also be given the opportunity to take on more responsibilities at an earlier stage in your career than might be the case in other larger offices. These opportunities include:

  • Chief negotiator on behalf of employers in collective bargaining
  • Counsel on:
    • Grievance arbitration hearings
    • Human rights mediations, hearings, and appeals
    • Labour board hearings
    • Employment standards appeals
    • Administrative tribunal hearings
    • Judicial reviews from all hearings
  • Conducting harassment and other workplace investigations
  • Providing proactive advice to employers on a wide variety of industries throughout the North

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate has a connection to Northern Canada and:

  • Successful completion of Bachelor of Laws Degree/Juris Doctor
  • 0-7 years’ experience in labour/employment law
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in cross-cultural environments
  • Demonstrates the ability to work well independently with confidence under time constraints
  • Has excellent verbal, negotiating, and written communication skills
  • Is able to articulate legal information clearly and practically to our clients
  • Is highly motivated, self-directed, and able to juggle multiple priorities efficiently
  • Is a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Has the ability and willingness to work in communities throughout Canada’s North
  • Must be eligible for admission into the Law Society of Northwest Territories and the Law Society of Nunavut
