Employee Engagement: How Leaders Make a Difference
Some leaders see employee disengagement as laziness, apathy, or even insubordination—and they respond with a heavy-handed, command-and-control approach. But that’s a surefire way to make employees retreat even further.
The truth is, leaders at all levels play a big role in either supporting or hindering their team’s engagement. If you notice a team member isn’t engaged, start by asking yourself these questions:
- Have I clearly communicated what they’re supposed to do?
- Have I explained why their work is important?
- Have I set clear expectations?
- Have I positively affirmed and acknowledged their good work?
- Have I clarified the impact of any performance issues?
- Have I ensured they have the skills and resources to succeed?
If you’re unsure of the answers or don’t know how the employee might respond, have a direct conversation. You may be surprised—most employees want to do well, contribute more, and help their organization succeed.
Your team wants to be engaged, and you can make a real difference. Check in with them, assess any barriers, and take a look at your workplace culture.
