Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa 2026 Recipient

The Law Society is pleased to announce Michael Francis O’Dea, KC as the recipient of this years degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. The Degree of Doctor of Laws is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated a distinguished career in the law, are of unimpeachable character, and enjoy an impeccable reputation for professional integrity and honesty. Recipients must also have made significant contributions to the legal profession, to the betterment of the law or justice system, or through volunteer service.

Called to the Bar in 1967, Francis (Frank) built a long and respected practice in civil litigation, with additional experience in labour and criminal law. He was appointed King’s Counsel in 1982, reflecting his standing as a skilled and trusted advocate. He appeared before courts and tribunals at all levels in the province and contributed to major public inquiries, including the Royal Commission on Pensions and the Mount Cashel Orphanage inquiry – work requiring both legal expertise and sound judgement in matters of public significance.

His colleagues consistently praised his professionalism in practice, describing him as “one of the most reasonable practitioners to deal with,” a reputation that speaks to an approach grounded in civility, fairness, and respect for others in the profession.

Francis’s contribution to the Law Society has been both enduring and far-reaching. He was elected Bencher in 1980, later served as Honorary Secretary, and became Treasurer of the Law Society in 1984-1985. He served on multiple committees, including as Chair of the Complaints Authorization Committee and contributed to national initiatives through the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. For example, he participated in key discussions on legal education reform following the 1985 National Conference on Legal Education.

Francis also played a significant role in the establishment of public law libraries in Corner Brook, Grand Falls, and Gander through his work with the Law Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and served for 28 years with the Lawyers’ Insurance Programme as Counsel, providing steady advice and reassurance to members of the profession.

His dedication and loyalty to his fellow members of the bar are insurmountable, reflected in his willingness to provide pro bono assistance to colleagues in disciplinary and complaints matters.

Beyond the profession, Francis devoted considerable energy to community service. He was active in recreation and youth sports on the Southern Shore, including coaching and leadership roles, and he served for over twenty years with the Rotary Club of St. John’s. Through the Rotary Club, he contributed to initiatives such as the establishment of Iris Kirby House, emergency health equipment acquisitions, youth exchange programs, and community housing and safety projects.

In summary, Francis’s career reflects sustained excellence in legal practice combined with an enduring commitment to service – within the profession, across institutions, and in the broader community. It is therefore both appropriate and fitting that he be recognized with the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in acknowledgment of a life marked by integrity, contribution, and public service.

In recognition of his distinguished legal career and his exemplary dedication to our profession, it is with great pleasure that we congratulate Michael Francis O’Dea, KC, on being awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
