Opportunity: Board Member – New Scottish Heritage Corporation (NL)
Closing Date
27 July 2026
Opportunity
The Scottish Corporation is seeking founding board members to help guide this initiative.
Background
In 2008, the Scottish Community of St. John’s was recognized as being of national historic significance for its role in the development of the historic Nation of Newfoundland.
Coming from the Lowlands of Scotland as international traders, doctors, engineers, governors, educators, and other professionals, they quickly became engaged in the political, business, industrial, and professional life of 19th- and 20th-century Newfoundland.
Although they never represented more than four percent of the population, their story and cultural contributions reflect immigrants building a new society. They were influential visionaries and agents of positive change, including leaders in the creation of democratic institutions. Scottish women were among the first feminist voices, with Lady Sarah Thorburn, wife of Prime Minister Thorburn, leading the first march for women’s right to vote.
Their story of nation-building remains relevant and meaningful today.
Project
The historic Scottish precinct of St. Andrew’s is located within the St. John’s Ecclesiastical District National Historic Site of Canada in downtown St. John’s. Its future preservation and presentation will be carried forward through the new Scottish Corporation.
