The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs is currently reviewing the Municipal Elections Act, which governs municipal elections in towns and cities across Newfoundland and Labrador. The legislation plays an important role in ensuring that local governments remain representative, accountable, and responsive to the residents they serve.

As part of this review, the Department is seeking input from organizations and individuals who represent a broad range of experiences across the province. Members are encouraged to share their perspectives on opportunities to modernize and strengthen the legislative framework governing local elections.

Written comments or recommendations may be submitted to MEAreview@gov.nl.ca by 26 October 2026. The Municipal Elections Act is available online for reference at SNL2001, Chapter M-20.2 – Municipal Elections Act.

Members are also welcome to participate in one of the following webinar sessions with the consultation team:

• October 8, 2026 – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
• October 20, 2026 – 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 
• October 22, 2026 – 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
