Call for Expressions of Interest and Nominations – CPATA Investigations Committee

Join CPATA’s Investigations Committee – Call for Expressions of Interest and Nominations

CPATA seeks talented, engaged individuals to participate as members of its Investigations Committee, which protects the public by investigating complaints against licensees.

Committee members will assist CPATA in attaining its vision to be a risk-focused, modern public interest regulator.

CPATA is seeking expressions of interest in order to fill four positions on its Investigations Committee: two licensees (non-IPIC member) and two non-licensees.

Committee members will be involved in reviewing complaints, providing direction with respect to investigations, and evaluating evidence to determine whether or not a licensee has engaged in professional misconduct or is incompetent. The successful candidates will be committed to fairness, attention to detail, and prepared to complete rigorous training in both administrative law principles and IP practice. Pursuant to the CPATA Act, this Committee is comprised of a non-licensee majority.

As Committee members, individuals will be expected to participate in bi-monthly Teams meetings and take time to review and adequately prepare for each meeting. Members are compensated for their time and expertise in accordance with the schedule set out in CPATA’s By-laws.

CPATA is strongly committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace, in the patent and trademark profession and in the delivery of patent and trademark services. CPATA invites and encourages applications from all qualified individuals, including members of racialized groups, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation, and persons of any gender identity or gender expression.

At this time there is a particular need for individuals fluent in both official languages, licensees with experience as a solo practitioner or in a small firm, and non-licensees with experience in professional regulation complaints investigation and administrative law principles. However, we encourage everyone who is interested to make a submission.

If interested, or to learn more, please email the CEO/Registrar, Juda Strawczynski, at ceo-dir@cpata-cabamc.ca by March 1, 2024.
