CYBER INSURANCE NOTICE
Why do you need cyber insurance? If you use the internet in any capacity, you and your law firm are targets for a cyber-attack. Cyber-attacks are unwelcome attempts to steal, expose, alter, disable, or destroy information through unauthorized access to computer systems. Cyber insurance provides coverage for lawyers and law firms who may fall victim to a wide range of cyber-attacks.
The Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association and Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador administer a Mandatory Cyber insurance program. CLIA has also been offering optional cybercrime endorsement coverage on a drop-down basis as part of the Voluntary Excess Program (VEP). This optional program provided limited third-party only coverage and while this endorsement made it easier to purchase some additional cyber protection, the coverage, limits and costs have become unattractive. As a result, the current VEP Cybercrime Endorsement program will be phased out effective June 30, 2022, in favour of a broader stand-alone cyber excess policy.
The new optional enhanced stand-alone cyber insurance provides much higher limits, broader coverages and is competitively priced and may be purchased through CLIA’s website. If you have questions, contact CLIA directly at service@clia.ca.
The Cyber Coverage Summary Sheet will provide you with information on your Mandatory Cyber and optional Stand-Alone Cyber Coverages, Coverage Explanations and how to report a Claim in the event of a cyber breach.
