Employment Opportunity: Journey Project Legal Support Navigator – PLIAN

(Western, Parental Leave Contract)

The Journey Project (TJP) is seeking a dynamic, trauma-informed, survivor-centered individual to join our team as a Legal Support Navigator (LSN) in the Western region for a one-year parental leave replacement contract. TJP is a part of Public Legal Information Association of NL (PLIAN), and this position will involve working with the rest of the PLIAN/Journey team to carry out the services and activities of the Journey Project by providing trauma-informed support to survivors of sexual violence and intimate partner violence in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Contract Duration
The initial contract is expected to start in October or November, 2024 and continue for 12 months, with the possibility of extension if funding allows.

Primary Tasks
Working directly with survivors to provide individualized support through the provision of general legal information, connections to legal and non-legal resources and supports, and referrals for eligible clients to lawyers as part of our Journey Project Legal Support Service.
This work will involve assisting survivors as they navigate legal systems, which will include answering inquiries from clients, communicating with clients on an ongoing and proactive basis, providing accompaniments, and liaising with lawyers and other service providers. Additionally, the LSN will ensure that clients are informed of opportunities to provide their feedback on services and participate in program evaluation.

This position will primarily involve serving Journey Project clients in the Western region. Services will be provided in-person (when practicable) or via telephone, text, videoconferencing, as preferred by the client. The LSN will collaborate with the Team Coordinator in St. John’s to ensure an appropriate and manageable workflow of clients.

This position will also be responsible for:

  • Maintaining Journey Project services in Corner Brook and throughout the Western region;
  • Working in partnership with Corner Brook Status of Women Council, the Bay St. George Status of Women Council, and other key stakeholders on the development, promotion, and delivery of services to Journey Project clients in the Western Region;
  • Conducting outreach activities with survivors, key stakeholders, and service providers in the Western region to promote the Journey Project.

Additional Duties

As part of the LSN team, the LSN will also be:

  • Engaging in ongoing training and learning to improve service delivery;
  • Participating in community/partner meetings, activities, events, and committees;
  • Contributing to the development and enhancement of TJP promotional, education, training, and information materials;
  • Working with members of the TJP team to organize and facilitate public presentations and training sessions. Travel within Newfoundland and Labrador will be required.

Mandatory Skills and Qualifications

  • Subject matter expertise in the area of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and other forms of gender-based violence;
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices and the impacts of trauma;
  • Experience providing professional information services and support to the public;
  • Understanding of the law and legal procedures related to gender-based violence;
  • Experience navigating the legal system/social services with an understanding of systemic barriers that restrict access to justice;
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations/trauma survivors from a client-centred approach;
  • Strong, demonstrated capabilities in the areas of care and sensitivity to survivors of violence
  • Understanding of anti-racist, anti-oppressive practices and frameworks;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills, including diplomacy, empathy, negotiation, and a commitment to building and fostering relationships;
  • Ability to work within a collaborative provincial team, often in a virtual format;
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and demonstrate flexibility;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point), Google Workspace, and Zoom;
  • A certificate, diploma, or degree in law, social work, or equivalent trainings and experience.

Logistics
The position will be primarily work from home with significant travel throughout the region, including dedicated days spent in Corner Brook and Stephenville.

The successful candidate will also be required to attend in-person training and orientation in St. John’s, NL from November 25 – 29, 2024. All travel costs will be covered.

The successful candidate will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement and undergo a Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Records Check by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and/or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Salary for the position is $64,000/year, plus benefits. Benefits include health and dental insurance coverage, a generous and flexible leave policy, and a regular RRSP contribution.
