Position Overview
Manitoba Justice is seeking to fill two (2) regular full-time Legal Research Officer positions in the Court of King’s Bench. The Legal Research Officer will conduct confidential research and writing for the Chief Justice and Justices of the Court of King’s Bench.
Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, and a sample document or excerpt (minimum 8 pages, maximum 20 pages) that demonstrates their legal research, analytical, and writing skills. This document will be used to assess the candidate’s ability to write clearly and concisely in a legal context.

Qualifications
Essential:
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
- Professional and academic experience demonstrating expertise in lengthy and complex legal research
- Extensive experience in preparing complex legal documents, memoranda, legal research papers, and/or academic legal writings
- Strong legal strategy development, advisory, and recommendation skills
- Excellent analytical abilities, including the capacity to recognize and assess legal implications and policy options
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills to handle high-pressure, time-sensitive environments with conflicting deadlines
- Superior understanding of the principles of judicial independence
- Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships with coworkers, the judiciary, and external parties
Desired:
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in French
- Experience in facilitation, coaching/mentoring, performance monitoring, and/or evaluation
Key Responsibilities
The Legal Research Officer will:
- Conduct extensive and complex legal research on matters before the Court
- Prepare legal memoranda and other written materials
- Engage in detailed discussions with members of the judiciary regarding procedural and substantive legal issues
- Supervise and provide oversight to law students participating in the Court of King’s Bench externship program (or comparable programs), including assigning and reviewing their work
- Assist with research, writing, and advisory tasks related to procedural, substantive, and policy issues affecting the administration of the courts and the judicial system
