Employment Opportunity: Senior Legal Counsel, Compliance – Fortis Inc.
Fortis Inc. (FTS/NYSE: FTS) has an exciting opportunity to join its team in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador as the Senior Legal
Counsel, Compliance. Reporting to the Vice President, General Counsel, the successful candidate will lead the organization’s Compliance
function and be an integral member of the Legal team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee the compliance framework to support adherence with legal requirements and internal policies;
- Promote a culture of ethics and compliance through the development and delivery of employee training on legal and policy
requirements; - Coordinate and facilitate compliance activities across the Fortis group;
- Monitor and support the organization’s legal and regulatory requirements and report on compliance performance;
- Support legal initiatives and undertake independent research;
- Provide legal guidance on matters relating to, among other things, corporate law, regulation, contracting, and data protection;
- Prepare and coordinate regulatory filings and submissions; and
- Support government relations advocacy activities relating to various public policy issues.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Highly analytical with an excellent understanding of corporate and regulatory law principles;
- Ability to work independently and exercise considerable discretion and judgment in performing duties;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
- Detail-orientated with excellent organizational skills.
Education and Experience:
- A law degree (LLB or JD) from a recognized law school;
- Membership in good standing with a law society in Canada or the United States;
- Eight (8) years’ experience in corporate, commercial, and regulatory compliance work; and
- Certified In-House Counsel-Canada (CIC.C) designation or similar designation and/or previous experience practicing as in-house
counsel considered an asset.
