How to Approach Difficult Discussions: Leadership Resources
Everyone has that one conversation they’re avoiding. You’ve rehearsed it a dozen times, but still hesitate to go through with it.
Maybe a team member is underperforming, a boundary has been crossed, or tensions are growing. Whatever the reason, the stakes feel high.
It’s normal to avoid difficult conversations. You might fear making things worse or hope the problem resolves itself (bad news—it won’t).
Avoiding the issue can snowball small problems into big ones and send the message that certain behaviours are acceptable.
Ultimately, you may be sacrificing long-term culture for short-term comfort.
So what can you do instead?

Start with curiosity, not accusation: Try “Can we talk about something I’ve noticed?” instead of “We need to talk.”

Name your intent: Clarify that the goal is shared understanding, not blame.

Stay rooted in values: Anchor the conversation in team or company values (e.g. respect, growth, collaboration).

Be brave and clear: Honesty builds trust, even if it feels awkward in the moment.

Feel confident in your approach: Attend workshops and webinars.
