Job Opportunity: Legal Officer – Supreme Court of NL

The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador is looking for a Legal Officer for the General Division. The incumbent will work under the direction of the Chief Justice and Associate Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as the other judges of the Court and will report to the Executive Legal Officer.

Duties: The Legal Officer is responsible for providing assistance to the General Division judges of the Supreme Court provincewide. This involves:

  • reviewing files, both pre- and post-hearing, and preparing preliminary briefings on points of law;
  • preparing bench and research memoranda;
  • assisting judges in reviewing cases;
  • participating in meetings and discussions with the judges;
  • participating in the organization and co-ordination of special projects;
  • assisting in the preparation of materials for judges’ seminars, court committees, and related issues;
  • assisting in the drafting of court rules and forms;
  • drafting correspondence to government officials, the judiciary and other stakeholders;
  • responding to inquiries from Registry staff; and
  • performing such other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must be, or be eligible to become, a member in good standing of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills, strong legal research skills, superior organizational skills, the ability to maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality, and an exceptional ability to identify and analyze problems. Demonstrated interpersonal skills are also essential. A security clearance is required. This is not an articling clerk position.

Location: St. John’s, NL

Salary (scale): Solicitor 1-4 on the Solicitor Pay Plan

Commencement Date: September 2026

Term: Two-year contractual position with possibility of further year-by-year extension.
