Call for Input: Law Commission of Ontario Study on Protection Orders

The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) wants your input on improving protection orders to help keep people safe from intimate partner violence and family violence.

We want to hear directly from people who have personal and/or professional experience with protection orders about their experiences and ideas for change.

What are protection orders?

Protection orders are legal tools that are supposed to protect people from violence in their intimate and family relationships. In Ontario, protection orders can include restraining orders, peace bonds, bail release orders or undertakings, exclusive possession orders, and criminal sentences with protective conditions (like conditional sentences or probation and parole orders).

Who should participate?

Anyone can participate. We have two surveys available:

  • If you work with protection orders as part of your professional role (e.g. advising, granting, enforcing, educating, supporting) we have an anonymous Professional Stakeholder Survey that takes 15-35 minutes to complete.
  • Members of the public, including those who have personal experience with protection orders, are invited to complete our anonymous Community Survey, which takes 15-35 minutes to complete.

You are welcome to complete both surveys if you have personal and professional experience with protection orders.

Why participate?

Your input matters. This is the first study of its kind in Ontario, and the LCO wants to hear from a broad range of community members about how protection orders are working and what needs to change. We want to put forward recommendations for reform that have been informed by our community members, including those who have direct experience with protection orders.

Full details, including survey links, FAQs, and our Glossary, are available on our project website.

The surveys will be open until Friday, April 11, 2025.

A flyer available here with information about the surveys for those who wish to print and post the flyer in their workplaces and communities, or to share online.
