Law Society Rule Amendment – Rule XVI – Client Identification and Verification Rules (Effective June 2023)

At the 9 June 2023 Convocation, Benchers approved amendments to Rule XVI – Client Identification and Verification Rules to mirror changes recently made to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada Model Rules.

The Client Identification and Verification Rules are essential to addressing the risks of money laundering and terrorism financing activities present in the practice of law. Further details regarding the amendments, which relate to the nature of documents for verifying a client’s identity and to the use of agents, may be found here. Guidance on the Federation of Law Societies Model Rules (on which ours are based) may be found here.
