Louise Saunders Recognized Under Provincial Historic Commemorations Program

Greenspond native Louise Maud Saunders (1897–1969) has been recognized as an Exceptional Person under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program.

Saunders was the first woman in Newfoundland and Labrador to be called to the Degree of Barrister of Law in 1933 and, in 1964, became the first woman in the province to be appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel).

Throughout her distinguished career, she helped pave the way for future generations of women in the legal profession.

A ceremony held recently at The Rooms honoured her lasting contributions to the province’s legal history. Congratulations to all involved in recognizing her remarkable legacy.
