New Release by S.S. Daisy Legal History Committee: Newfoundland’s 17th & 18th Century Judicature

The S.S. Daisy Legal History Committee is pleased to announce the release of their latest work, Newfoundland’s 17th & 18th Century Judicature: The Path to 1792 and the Role of the Law Officers of the Crown, in two volumes.

This work delves into the development of legal principles in Newfoundland during the 17th and 18th centuries, from the Western Charter to the establishment of a Supreme Court of appellate and inherent jurisdiction in 1792. The volumes explore how early Chief Justices interpreted and applied laws to resolve diverse legal matters brought before them. Additionally, they shed light on the crucial contributions of the Law Officers of the Crown in shaping Newfoundland’s legal landscape—an aspect of history often overlooked until now.

Copies are available for $20 each.
