Notice to Members Re: Engineering and Geoscience Matters in Your Legal Practice
Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) is an organization that regulates the engineering and geoscience professions in the public interest. PEGNL has approximately 5,000 members and is accountable to the public through the provincial Department of Government Services. Members can learn more about PEGNL and its regulatory role on our website Who Is PEGNL? – PEGNL – Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, registration is mandatory for anyone practicing engineering or geoscience as defined in the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, 2008 (Act). Professional members licensed by PEGNL (including Limited Licensees) are the only persons permitted by law to undertake and assume responsibility for engineering and geoscience work in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Those offering engineering or geoscience services to the public must also have a permit to practice.
PEGNL encourages members of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador to visit our website at MemberSearch to confirm the practice status of such professionals who provide expert opinions in litigation matters in the province.
Further, for business law practitioners especially , PEGNL refers you to sections 12-17 of the Act with regard to the exclusive use of the terms engineering and geoscience as well as the permitted use of Professional Designations i.e. P. Eng and P. Geo. in this province.
