Corwin Mills, QC

Passed peacefully away at Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Friday, November 20, 2015, Corwin Mills, QC of Clarenville, aged 70 years. Predeceased by his parents Jack and Mildred Mills. Left with fond and loving memories his wife June; daughter Sonja (Alicia) and son Steven (Marin); sister Rowena McNeil; brothers Archie Mills and Merlin Mills (Shirley); and a large circle of extended family and close friends.

Corwin received a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce Degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1967. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of British Columbia in 1971. He was admitted to the Bar on April 10th, 1972. In 1983, he earned a Master of Laws Degree in Marine Law from the University of Wales, U.K., with his thesis on the topic of ship’s mortgages. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988 and a Master of the Supreme Court in 1998. During his 43 year career, he appeared in all levels of the court in the province and the Supreme Court of Canada.

He was the recipient of the Canadian Bar Association Newfoundland Branch Distinguished Public Service Award in 2001, and in 2015, he received the Gordon M. Stirling, QC, Distinguished Service Award, for members and former members of the Law Society, and of the judiciary who have made a substantial contribution to the Law Society, the legal profession or the administration of justice, while at the same time making a significant contribution to the public or one’s community.

In 2014, Corwin was inducted into the Clarenville Area Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame for his exemplary professional career. Corwin was heavily involved in community activities including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, White Hills Ski Resort, Clarenville Nordic Ski Club, the 1994 Winter Games Committee and numerous other boards and committees over the years.

In 1978, he was the Co-Winner of the Leroy Miller Award, along with his wife June, as Clarenville’s Sports Builder of the Year. In 2014, he and his wife June were named Patrons of the 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in recognition of their contribution to the community, and in particular, their contribution to the sport of cross country skiing. In 2015, Corwin was inducted into the Cross Country Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame.

The legal community has lost one its most distinguished lawyers and the town of Clarenville has lost one of its long time community leaders.

Resting at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville on Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. and Sunday November 22, 2015 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Memorial United Church, Clarenville with interment at Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery. In his memory donations may be made to the ALS Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, Dr. G B Cross Memorial Hospital or a charity of ones choice.
