Seminar Overview:
This session has been developed for participants to learn about the mediation process by a trained mediator from a federal labour board secretariat, and how to effectively participate in mediation processes to improve the chances of reaching resolution. Learning may be applied to various contexts of disputes and different types of alternative dispute resolution, including settlement discussions. The session will include group discussions and the opportunity to ask questions.
Objectives:
- Acquaint participants with the Board’s mandate and initiatives
- Explore the benefits of mediation, roles of all participants in the process and the various steps of the FPSLREB mediation process
- Discuss some of the challenges faced as representatives in mediation, and how to effectively overcome them
Seminar Presenters:
Jonathan Elston
Jonathan Elston is a Mediator and Dispute Resolution Specialist with the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board (FPSLREB) Secretariat. He studied law at McGill University and has a Masters in Conflict Resolution and Governance from the University of Amsterdam. Jonathan was a lecturer in industrial relations and conflict resolution at McGill University, Carleton University and Simon Fraser University.
