Seminar Overview
Most lawyers have assisted clients with estate planning and preparation of wills. For some, it is a regular part of their practice. For others, it is a service that they offer sporadically. In either event, lawyers must remember that every client is unique and drafting a will can often be a complex exercise. To ensure that you are providing the best possible legal service to your clients, it is important to refresh your grasp of the fundamentals. Professors Freedman and Thomson are subject matter experts who will be providing guidance on best practices from the initial retainer up to the reporting letter and closing of your file.

C. David Freedman
C. David Freedman is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University where he teaches Wills & Estates, Trusts, Estate Litigation, and Civil Procedure. His writing concentrates on these same areas and includes co-authorship of Oosterhoff on Wills. David holds degrees in law from Osgoode Hall Law School, Oxford, and Cambridge.

In addition to his academic appointment, he is Counsel to the firm of Wagner Sidlofsky LLP in Toronto, and has been designated a Certified Specialist in Estates and Trusts Law by the Law Society of Ontario. David’s practice is restricted to estates, trust, and guardianship litigation. In 2010, David started the first Elder Law Clinic at a Canadian law school at Queen’s Law. David is an enthusiastic but largely untalented recreational blacksmith and woodworker. He’s always been a huge Habs fan; now he licks his wounds and dreams of revenge as he mutters at the television on game nights.

Jane Thomson
Jane Thomson is an associate professor at UNB’s Faculty of Law where she teaches in the areas of property, wills and estates, and private law theory. She received her LLB from Dalhousie University and her LLM from Harvard Law School. She is currently completing her PhD in law at Queen’s University; her research focuses on the use of private law theory by Canadian courts to effect social and economic legal reform.

Prior to joining UNB, Jane served as a law clerk at the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. Jane also practiced family law in Toronto and Ottawa. During her time in private practice, she taught as a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law in the area of wills and estates and trusts.
