Transfer under the National Mobility Agreement 2013 or Territorial Mobility Agreement 2013

A practicing member of another law society that is a signatory to the National Mobility Agreement 2013 or the Territorial Mobility Agreement 2013 can transfer and become a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador pursuant to the terms of the Mobility Agreement and Rule 7.10 and the terms of the relevant agreement.

Application for Transfer

An Application for Admission (Transferring Canadian Lawyer) and the documents/items listed therein must be completed and/or sent to the Director of Admissions and Education for approval. Once the transfer application has been approved, reading materials will be forwarded to the applicant for review. Upon completing the reading requirement, the applicant will be required to complete the Declaration – Reading Requirement and submit it to the Law Society in order to be eligible to be called to the bar.

Call to the Bar

There are currently two call to the bar ceremonies each year which take place in February and June. A lawyer that wishes to seek permission to practice in Newfoundland and Labrador prior to being called to the bar must indicate this in their application.

Transfer Fee

The transfer fee is currently $3,162.50 ($2,750.00 + $412.50 HST); however, this fee is subject to change and you should contact the Law Society to confirm the current fee prior to submitting payment. This fee is required to be paid at the time of your application.

Call to the Bar Fee

The Call to the Bar fee is currently $718.75 ($625.00 + $93.75 HST); however, this fee is subject to change and you should contact the Law Society to confirm the current fee prior to submitting payment.
