A completed application for admission as a student should contain the following:

  1. Application for Admission as a Student;
  2. A Certificate of Qualification issued by the National Committee on Accreditation (applicable to internationally-trained law graduates only)
  3. Original law school transcript sent directly to the Director of Admissions and Education by the issuing institution, which shows that the candidate has met all of the prerequisites for graduation;
  4. Notarized copy of a Government Issued Photo ID;
  5. Criminal Record Screening Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check;
  6. Proof of legal name (see: item 2 in Application for Admission as a Student for details);
  7. Articles of Clerkship (please note that principals must meet certain requirements, pursuant to rule 6.07);
  8. Articling Skills and Experience Checklist; and
  9. Application fee of $345.00 ($300.00 + $45.00 HST)

A complete application for admission to the Law Society as a student shall be submitted to the Law Society no later than:

  1. the second Monday in May, for admission to the Articling Term commencing on June 1st; or
  2. the second Monday in December, for admission to the Articling Term commencing on January 30th.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, an applicant seeking to commence their articling term on June 1st may provide their transcript no later than June 30th of that same year.

Admissions are subject to the Law Society Act, 1999 (the “Act”) and the Law Society Rules (the “Rules”), which include regulations, by-laws and resolutions approved by the governing body of the Law Society.  It remains the responsibility of the applicant to be aware of and meet all the requirements and deadlines necessary for admission to the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Should questions arise considering these requirements, these questions should be addressed directly to the Director of Admissions and Education.
